The potential of deforestation-free agreements to decrease deforestation and promote sustainable supply chains: The case of the Soy Moratorium in Brazil

چکیده

Deforestation trends in the Brazilian Amazon have been increasingly linked to globalized markets for beef, timber, soybean, and other commodities. In recent years there has been a remarkable proliferation of deforestation-free agreements to pressure corporations to adopt more environmentally responsible practices around the world. The Brazilian Soy Moratorium (SoyM), the first voluntary deforestation-free agreement carried out in the tropics, was implemented in 2006 and pressed major soybean traders to stop purchasing soy grown on deforested lands in the Amazon. To better understand the uptake process of the SoyM, this research: i) explored the ways in which diverse forces (markets, international rules and norms, and direct access to domestic policies) influenced the agreement; ii) analyzed key concomitant events that took place throughout the agreement’s implementation; and iii) developed recommendations to enforce deforestation-free agreements. Studies show that eight years after the establishment of the SoyM, soy expansion realized through deforestation in the Amazon has decreased considerably, yet the overall soy production continued to grow. Enforcement of laws, restrictions on access to credit, and expansion of protected areas appear to have contributed to this decline, as did a decline in the demand for new deforestation. This case study provides valuable lessons on the importance of a package ofmeasures (public policies, monitoring systems, supply chain interventions) to slow the advance of a complex agricultural frontier.

Soy moratorium impacts on soybean and deforestation dynamics in Mato Grosso, Brazil

Previous research has established the usefulness of remotely sensed vegetation index (VI) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to characterize the spatial dynamics of agriculture in the state of Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil. With these data it has become possible to track MT agriculture, which accounts for ~85% of Brazilian Amazon soy production, across periods of sev...

The Soy Moratorium in the Amazon Biome Monitored by Remote Sensing Images

The Soy Moratorium is a pledge agreed to by major soybean companies not to trade soybean produced in deforested areas after 24th July 2006 in the Brazilian Amazon biome. The present study aims to identify soybean planting in these areas using the MOD13Q1 product and TM/Landsat-5 images followed by aerial survey and field inspection. In the 2009/2010 crop year, 6.3 thousand ha of soybean (0.25% ...

Attribution of CO2 emissions from Brazilian deforestation to consumers between 1990 and 2010

Efforts to reduce deforestation to mitigate climate change and to conserve biodiversity are taking place on a global scale. While many studies have estimated the emissions occurring from deforestation, few studies have quantified the domestic and international drivers sustaining deforestation rates. In this study we establish the link between Brazilian deforestation and production of cattle and...

Study of most element of forest destruction by used the IRS-1C and LANDSAT image in the southern zagros forest (Case study: Kohkeloeye and Boveirahmad province)

The Zagros forests (west of Iran) have been highly exploited in recent decades by human impacts. Easy access, abundance and variety of valuable forest yields have led to population growth density, creation of new residential areas and deforestation activities. In order to determinate the distribution and rate of deforestation from 1995 to 2006 by using the satellite imagery (IRS-1C and  LANDSAT...
